As with the Floor Overlay Treatments the choices are extensive many requiring the removal of the existing ceiling and replacing with an acoustic one. There are essentially only two methods of Ceiling systems, Attached or Independent.
Attached simply means the acoustic ceiling treatment is attached to the separating floor structure via some mechanical anti vibration tie. Independent ceilings do not attach to the separating floor structure in any way and are supported off the surrounding walls.
Either system will increase the current depth of the ceiling and frankly the more the better. Testing has proven that an Independent ceiling using a fairly basic finished treatment will outperform an attached using the same finished treatment by at least 30%. Increase in depth can have aesthetic implications particularly when the system falls below the current window or other opening. In such cases a pelmet recess detail would be necessary as below.
It must be noted that the installation techniques used in constructing Independent Ceilings are quite complicated incorporating correct densities of materials at the right points of contact. Attention to junction detail is paramount to ensuring system performance is not compromised at these points |
